Your Centre - Modern Beauty Salon
On the 20th June 2013 Springburn Shopping Centre welcomed Jaspreet (“Jas”) to the centre with her new business, Modern Beauty Salon. At first Jas took a stall in the centre and has since expanded to move into one of our retail outlets. We met with Jas this week to discuss her time with Springburn Shopping Centre and discuss her plans for the future.
Q.1 You’ve been part of the Springburn Shopping Centre for 6 ½ years, what made you want to start your business here?
When I first decided to start my business in the shopping centre I didn’t know if it was going to work, but I regularly visited the centre and often thought about starting a beauty salon. So one day I asked the centre manager about starting a salon and they were very supportive and helpful. You knew the managers and centre staff wanted to help, which is why I decided to start small and try to expand. I thought I would give it a shot and knowing the centre and the people was an advantage. We started with just two chairs and one reception desk and now we’ve invested in additional equipment so we can offer much more.
Q2. What’s been the key to your success and company growth?
Initially we offered eyebrow threading but over time customers asked for other treatments so we expanded our range to be able to meet their needs. Part of the success has been offering extra services and now we offer waxing, massages, tinting, extensions and nails. The most important part of the success and growth has been the customers; word of mouth has been excellent and people travel from miles around to come to the centre for their appointments. We have wonderful customers and we love to ensure they get the same beautician every time, where possible, so they feel comfortable with our friendly staff and receive a consistent level of service.
Q3. What do you love about having your business in Springburn Shopping Centre?
The people. Often we’ll start with one member of a family and over time other family members will come into see us. The people in Springburn are kind and generous and we have a great rapport with our customers. The centre brings in local people from the community so it’s great being part of that community spirit.
Q4. What have you learned from being a business owner?
Since we took our first stand in the centre we have grown steadily and we’ve now moved our beauty salon into a larger unit. We have also expanded and opened a salon in Newton Mearns too. It’s taken a lot of honesty and hardwork but the customer satisfaction makes it worthwhile. We now have 3 permanent members of staff and a number of trainee employees. Essentially it’s been hardwork and honesty which I’ve learned most from being a business owner.
Q5. To anybody thinking about starting a business in the centre, what would you tell them?
Do it! It’s a great place to start a business. The people are lovely, from the centre management to the customers. Everything about being part of Springburn Shopping Centre is wonderful. It’s good fun being part of the Springburn community - you meet lots of lovely people and you can learn a lot being a business owner.
